If your addiction counsellor was in recovery would you want to know? Counsellors who are in addiction recovery often struggle with this decision as there appear to be benefits to both approaches.

The recovery process is a transformative one. After undergoing this life-altering change, many recovering addicts opt to pursue a career guiding others on their recovery journey. In fact, it is estimated that approximately half of all addiction counsellors are in recovery themselves. Whether or not counsellors should disclose their recovery status to clients is up for debate. Some claim that professional boundaries should always be maintained during addiction treatment while others argue that revealing one’s own recovery is beneficial to the treatment process.
