How Early Porn Use Increases Risk of Sex Addiction

Young people are more exposed to internet pornography than ever before.  How does this increase the risk of sex addiction, and what are the consequences?

One study found that 42% of youth aged 10-17 had been exposed to internet porn in the past year.  In another study, 41% of parents surveyed reported their children had been exposed to porn.  Viewers also have a limitless range of pornographic material available to them.

While normal levels of porn use are perfectly healthy, early exposure to porn (and potentially resulting porn addiction) carries with it risks such as early sex, high-risk sex, sex addiction and sexual violence.  Porn addiction often leads to guilt, shame, intimacy disorders and the inability to carry out healthy sexual relationships, and can take hold even before users become sexually active.

Porn addiction is a subtype of sex addiction.  Signs of porn addiction include:

  • Increased amount of time spent watching porn
  • Increasingly bizarre content
  • Lying about or hiding porn use
  • Inability to stop despite negative consequences
  • Loss of interest in sex
