Porn and Sex Addiction are Increasing Among Malaysian Teens

New studies show that sex and porn addiction are on the rise in Malaysia, and those most affected are the country’s youth.

You may have discovered your sexuality the same way that many Malaysian youths do – by having a friend or schoolmate introduce you to porn. In fact, young people are first exposed to sex via pornography at an early age.

As many teens don’t receive comprehensive education about sex before they become sexually active, many develop an unhealthy relationship with sex that’s often expressed by intimacy issues or serious sexual addictions.

Addiction to sex and pornography may not be as well-known as addiction to drugs and alcohol, but it can have equally serious effects on one’s life. The high prevalence of sex and porn addiction in Malaysia indicates that there are underlying mental disorders among many of Malaysia’s teens that remain untreated.

The Malaysian Insight spoke to several people about the origins of their sex addictions. It’s quite common to hear people reveal that they were introduced to porn when they were 12 years or younger.

The Prevalence of Sex and Porn Addiction in Malaysia

A government study showed that 35.3% of Malaysian teens watch porn. More than half of this material is accessed online, which often portrays an unrealistic vision of intimacy.  This can create unrealistic expectations in teens who watch porn before their first sexual experience.

In fact, the majority of teens who habitually watch porn are not engaging in sexual activity – a sign that this disorder has little to do with sex and more to do with how viewing porn triggers an addictive dopamine release in the brain.

While porn addiction may pose less threat than an addiction to physical sex, it is still a serious process addiction and should be treated as such.

Peer Influences That Lead to Sex Addiction

Peer pressure plays a huge role in the increasing trend of sexual and porn addiction in Malaysia. Many Malaysian youths are introduced to pornography through their peers at school.

Many private schools allow students to share room and board with their classmates. If your child shares a flat with a sexually active student, they may feel pressured to seek out their own experiences.

Seeking sex as a form of approval is much more likely to lead to sexual addiction. Much like drug addicts who take their first hit because they want to seem cool, youth who first have sex to fit in will likely need to continue having sex to feel socially accepted.

If your child lives on their own, they may have unsupervised access to the internet. This makes it very easy for them to be exposed to pornography.

It’s important to talk to your children about these things openly and honestly so they don’t develop sexual issues that go untreated. Unfortunately, teens who suffer from porn and sex addictions are not often referred to the rehab treatment programmes they need.

The Influence of Malaysia’s Education System

The Malaysian education system itself further compounds the problem. According to sociologist Dr Kartini Aboo Thalib, the school system focuses mostly on academic achievement while neglecting to instill students with holistic life practices and wholesome values.

It’s important that you ensure your children are fulfilled emotionally so they can develop good principles and ethics. Dr Kartini also stresses the importance of addressing mental health problems among youth. Many of those suffering from porn addiction in Malaysia have emotional or social needs that are not being met.

“Teenagers facing social and family pressure could be looking for ways to fill these gaps… so if they’re not guided properly, they will turn to pornography.”

Learning to Manage Sex and Porn Addiction

When it comes to addiction, it’s also important to address the root cause – this could be unaddressed trauma, social pressures or family issues.

There’s no shame in helping your child overcome their problem. Reaching out to them might be enough to help them take a step towards recovery and beating their sexual addiction.  Contact us for more information on treatment options.
