The reasons why these actors and pop stars don’t drink are more varied than you might imagine.
A new list compiled by Harper’s Bazaar celebrates 60 celebrities who have made the choice to forgo alcohol.
The most common reason given for their sobriety—particularly by male superstars—was the overcoming of addiction: actors Zac Efron, Bradley Cooper, Ben Affleck, Brad Pitt and Gerard Butler were among those who gave up drinking after struggling with substance abuse.
Yet a number of women came forward as having fought alcohol abuse at an early age, notably singers Demi Lovato and Lana Del Rey, and actresses Eva Mendes and Edie Falco. Tattoo artist Kat Von D recently marked 10 years of sobriety with a public Instagram post.
For many celebs, the choice not to drink is simply a lifestyle decision. Actresses Natalie Portman and Blake Lively said alcohol and drugs are not desirable and do not fit their way of life. Rumer Willis—daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore—told People magazine last year that she “did ‘Sober January’ and just decided to keep going.”
Renowned DJ Calvin Harris attributed his decision not to drink to his health, describing alcohol in a 2009 BBC interview as “affecting [his] brain in the worst way.”
Fifteen years ago, Latin pop sensation Jennifer Lopez told InStyle—of alcohol—“I think that ruins your skin.” She’s turning 49 this year and continues to be known for her trademark glow.
